Effects on health and the environment from the handling and use of sewage
sludge
Summary:
ABSTRACT
Modern man is confronted daily with the environmental impacts caused by the
intervention of the natural environment. The warming, as a result of climate change,
acidification, pollution of soil and water (underground and surface) are some of the
problems that arose due to the lack of or partial prevention of pollution.
In every human activity wastes are produced, many of which can be dangerous for human
health. It is therefore essential to treatment of waste before disposal to a consignee (soil,
water, air).
Liquid waste is all quantities of water that may arise either from domestic activities, toilet
and household wastewater, whether from industrial activities, or by various other
anthropogenic activities, which are collected in the city's sewer system and are guided in
their editing space. Wastewater treatment is the set of processes aimed at reducing the
harmfulness of wastewater in humans and the environment.
The mud will come from processing plants to biological wastewater and waste should be
managed is processed and made available in an efficient and safe way to not harm humans
and the environment. By sludge is meant the treatment of waste residues that are in liquid
or semisolid form. The processing, storage, removal and disposal of sludge are problems
to be solved, as only a small percentage that is solid and the remainder is water, while the
solid consists essentially of the organic matter of the waste creates the same disturbances
as those where biodegrade.
In the treatment of sewage sludge used variety of procedures such as thickening,
digestion, stabilization, dewatering (by physical and mechanical means), drying, and
burning. In carrying out such operations presented nuisances such as gas production,
odors, etc. where applying the right measures can be addressed. The disposal of sludge is
either in landfills or by incineration or land disposal, either using in agriculture. Each of
the above methods has advantages and disadvantages. Over the years they have also been
used and several additional disposal methods designed to produce energy, fertilizer,
hydrogen, biogas and fuel.
One of the major benefits of the treatment of organic sludge is preventing methane
emission into the atmosphere and bio fertilizer production while after appropriate
processing, whereas biogas is produced which has various uses as heat or electricity.
All processes are subject to the treatment and the disposal of sludge may cause pollution
of the environment and consequently impacts on human health.
