The Measurement Problem in Quantum Mechanics: Interpretations and Perspectives
Summary:
This thesis concerns the measurement problem in Quantum Mechanics. This problem emerges as a fundamental tension inside the axiomatic structure of the theory as it is formulated within the framework of Hilbert spaces. In particular, the evolution of the state of a system, as it is described by the Schrödinger equation, appears to be interrupted during a measurement process. The system suddenly switches to a definite state which in general is different from the one specified by the dynamical equation. To address this problem, a plethora of solutions have been proposed, which are associated with corresponding interpretational approaches (such as the Copenhagen or Many-Worlds interpretation). In this thesis, we begin by presenting the mathematical formalism of Quantum Mechanics and then proceed with a formal exposition of the measurement problem. Then, we examine different interpretations as possible solutions to it. We give emphasis to what these interpretative frameworks mean for the nature of reality.
