Summary:
The subject of this thesis is the on stage presentation of Sophocles’ Ajax tragedy in Modern Greek theater. The main goal of our work is to present the different versions of Ajax from the beginnings of Modern Greek Theater to the present day. Through Ajax we attempt to answer some of the key questions in the context of the overall understanding of ancient Greek drama: What were the goals of each director? Why did they choose this play? What messages did they want to convey to the audience? Why the performance frequency of this play is so small? For what reasons has interest in the play increased over the past few years, producing a number of pioneering performances? The early performances of Ajax on the Modern Greek stage are shortly presented according to bibliographical references. The most recent performances (from 1958 onwards) are analyzed in detail. In all the performances that we have had audiovisual material at our disposal, we analyze specific scenes of the play and the issues that arise from it. In the epilogue we present the ever-present issue of the author's or director's prevalence in the stage performance of the ancient tragedy: Is the ancient theater logos or spectacle? Which of the two is prevailing in modern performances? How did the Ajax directors dealt with this problem? The play offers multiple readings and different interpretations of the central hero's morality. The different approaches in direction offer a variety of play readings and different visuals of the hero.
