"Complications in patients undergoing classic hemodialysis".
Summary:
Introduction: Patients with end stage renal disease, who are submitted to chronic hemodialysis (HD) therapy, exhibit a variety of complications and symptoms, leading to increased possibility of interruption of the current therapy session, possible withdrawal of the future HD sessions and eventually, poor outcome for these patients’ health.
Aim: The investigation of complications and symptoms of patients under classical hemodialysis treatment, during the session of therapy.
Methodology: This is a prospective study that took place from September 2016 until April 2017. The sample of the study consisted of 71 patients with end stage renal disease, who were submitted to chronic classical HD treatment. The collection of the sample took place in a general hospital of Athens under specific criteria of accession. A register scale was used, which was created by the researchers after a wide literature review. In the course of the study, ethical principles of research were strictly adhered to. The statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS statistical program version 19.0.
Results: The gender (male) had an aggravating role in the occurrence of hemodialysis complications, as well as hypertension and dyslipidemia. Additionally, patients with poor pharmaceutical compliance, increased mean arterial pressure, and increased creatinine serum level before HD session, were associated with HD complications. On the other hand, marital status (married) and good financial status, are a protective role for the appearance of HD complication. Finally there is a statistical significant correlation between appearance of HD complications and development of HD symptoms in patients under HD treatment.
Conclusions: Although developed technology in combination with specialized nurses provide a better profile of HD session therapy, plenty of complications and symptoms continue to exist, worsening the quality of the HD therapy and the quality of life of the patients submitted to classical HD treatment.
