ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AND RESTORATION MEASURES OF THE GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI
Summary:
The March 11th 2011 earthquake of Mw=9, that occurred offshore NE Japan, triggered major tsunami waves that affected almost all of the NE coast of Japan and caused massive casualties. The crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant raised serious issues about the remediation and protection of citizens from exposure to radioactivity. This paper reviews the environmental impacts of this triple hit(earthquake-tsunami-radioactivity) as well as to show and analyze the ways of restoration . Disaster debris management, tsunami deposits, quality of ground and groundwater, proposed guidelines for radiation, change of beach morphology and finally transport and accumulation floating debris into the Pacific Ocean are the major issues.
