Psychosocial adjustment of adolescents from Double- Career Families: A sample from Athens.
Summary:
This study investigates psychosocial adjustment of the adolescents whose parents are both career-oriented. Specifically, the adolescents from Dual – Career families (DC) were compared with the adolescents from Dual – Earner families (DE), the adolescents from Single- Earner Families (SE) as well as the adolescents where one parent is career-oriented and the other is occupation-oriented (CE). We measured their strengths and difficulties, the type of attachment and the emotional proximity with members of a nuclear family including the grandparents. Finally, we looked at how much leisure time the adolescents spend with their father, their mother and both parents during weekdays and weekends. The sample consisted of 207 adolescent first-year junior and senior high school students from four different schools located in Athens, Greece. Participants were given the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) (Goodman, 1997), the Attachment Scale (Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991), and the Concentric Cycles Questionnaire (Georgas et al., 2001) which is based on the Social Distance Scale (Bogardus, 1933). Furthermore, the students were to answer improvised questions about the amount of leisure time they spend with their parents on weekdays and weekends. In conclusion, findings which are common with those of David – Spanopoulou (2016), show that the adolescents from Dual – Career families do not differ from the adolescents of the groups of comparison at any dependent variable.
