The representation of disability and deformity in Grimm's fairytales
Summary:
Purpose of this paper is to examine the way in which ability and deformity are represented in the adaptations of Grimm’s fairytales, either they appear as an independent children book, either they are part of a fairytales collection.
The thesis is divided in two parts. The first one contains a survey of the bibliography about Grimm’s fairytales and the issue of disability and deformity and the second one presents the research which was conducted on the contemporary illustrated children books.
By starting from a reference to brothers’ Grimm life and work, but also by defining the terms of disability and deformity, the paper introduces the reader to these fairytales. Subsequently, it presents him previous researchers’ foundings and literary analyses based on different readings and interpretations of the texts. Main point of this whole part of the thesis is how disability is portrayed.
The main part of the research refers to the illustrated adaptations of Grimm’s fairytales and thoroughly examines how the concept of disability and deformity are constructed by the language and the images used in them. Furthermore, special attention is given to the extent in which these concepts are changed.
