Evaluation of an intervention to increase the consumption of water while decreasing the consumption of SSBs in kindergartens in Attica
Summary:
According to the World Health Organisation, more than one in ten adults was obese worldwide in 2014. Also, more than half of the adults in 46 European countries were overweight or obese, while the problem was worse for groups of lower socio-economic status. More worrying, though, is the fact that, in developed countries, the prevalence of overweight/obesity in children younger than five increased from 7.9% in 1990 to 11.7% in 2010, and it is estimated to reach 14.1% in 2020. Many studies have highlighted the seriousness of the problem in Greece, where seven out of ten adults were overweight/obese in 2016. In 2010, Greece had the highest prevalence of overweight/obesity in Europe for children of 7 years (48.9%, OB 23.9%) and 9 years (57.2%, OB 30.5%). Generally, lifestyle changes, such as low levels of physical activity, high levels of sedentary behaviour and unhealthy dietary choices, are the most important reasons for these trends. Within an ecological framework, the problem is related to individual, family, local, organisational/institutional and systemic/cultural factors, thus difficult to deal with. Overweight/obesity is linked to a multitude of non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, some cancers, musculo-skeletal or motor problems, psychosocial problems and many others, which burden the population, but also the health systems of countries. Many initiatives have been undertaken internationally and by European authorities, but, in Greece, few are the interventions that have taken place and a lot of them are either not reported in the bibliography or not evaluated in a scientific way, perhaps due to the paucity of resources of the organisations involved. The present document will describe an intervention that took place in kindergartens in six European countries simultaneously and had four arms: water consumption, healthy snacking, physical activity and sedentary behaviour. The document will concentrate on the intervention as it was implemented in Greece on one of the four arms, i.e. ‘water consumption’.
