Summary:
Burnout Syndrome (professional burnout) significantly affects the nursing staff, especially through international surveys who have noted that the nursing industry is suffering globally. The first approach to the concept of "burnout" was by the American psychiatrist Freudenberger, (1974) who identified as the exhaustion of the person, which comes from prolonged use of energy reserves.
In 1984 the most accepted definition was propounded by the American Psychologist Christine Maslach and her partner, Susan E. Jackson, after the syndrome became the subject of study by many other researchers. It was identified as a psychosomatic process evolutionary syndrome which is characterized by three factors: a) emotional exhaustion, b) depersonalization, c) reduced personal accomplishment
Health and mental care professionals, in particular nurses, are prone to burnout syndrome, because their work is about human. The daily contact with patients, and the combination of various negative labour factors and personal characteristics, results in nurses to show high rates of burnout, thus putting at risk the physical and mental health and influencing the quality of service, and the quality of life of the workers themselves. The economic crisis affecting nowadays the Greece is another aggravating factor.
Aim of the survey is the study of burnout, quality of life and general health status of nursing staff employed in different departments of General Hospitals in Attica in times of economic crisis.
