Summary:
The current paper on “Pre-school literacy” explores the perceptions of sophomore students of School of Education -and, specifically, of the Department of Early Childhood Education- about literacy practices, before their practical exercise in Kindergarten. Methodological tool for the collection and analysis of participant observation of the survey is the questionnaire, which was distributed to eighty six students. The thesis consists of the theoretical and the research part. The first one includes the analysis of the main concepts concerning literacy, which will constitute the main theoretical structure of our research findings. The second part presents the research objectives, the methodology, the data categorization and the analysis of our findings. The last part includes the extensions and limitations of the research. Finally, the classification and the procession of the students’ answers, lead to the conclusion that they tend to focus on the importance of learning ‘how to read and write’, ignoring, at the same time, the social dimension of learning.
