Developing an educational software for the approach of the thermal phenomena melting and freezing and soluble-non-soluble materials for kindergarten education
Summary:
The current thesis analyzes the development of an educational simulative software for Kindergarten education, related to the discipline of Natural Sciences, and more specifically to the topics of "Non-Soluble- Soluble Materials" and “Thermal phenomena: Melting and Freezing of the Materials”. Basic motive of our attempt is the absence of similar educational software within the Greek education context for the aforementioned subject, as well as the need of students nowadays to interact with the digital world.Within this framework, we designed our software based on specific parameters, such as the Theories of Learning, the specific characteristics of preschool aged children, the nature of the discipline of Natural Sciences and the objectives of the Educational Curriculum. Moreover, we investigated the children’s perceptions of the above-mentioned natural phenomena, as well as, their digital preferences and the appealing characteristics of digital games. These parameters served as the basis for our software design. The current thesis describes in detail, the multiple factors taken into account while implementing the software, with an appropriate programming tool, as well as the interim assessment of its usability through the Think Aloud Protocol. This evaluation method was implemented to improve the software’s usability, leading -consequently- to the implementation of experimental research in order to evaluate the effectiveness of software at a cognitive level.
