Free readings of Oedipus in theater and cinema in 21st century from contemporary Greek makers
Summary:
The purpose of the present dissertation is to investigate the perception of Oedipus by Greek writers and directors of the 21st century both in theater and cinema. The story of Oedipus has been selected because the tragic hero struggles with himself facing devastating issues such as incest, patricide, hereditary burden, personal responsibility and finally the subject of personal and political "insult". In a symbolic level a deeper analysis urges us think about the function of blindness and vision, ignorance and knowledge but mainly makes us wonder how all these elements are adapted by nowadays Greek artistic production. In this perspective, the essay exams the journey of the myth before Sophocles’ play, continues with a retrospective overview which outlines the important international versions of Oedipus the King in theater, cinema, television, literature and opera, to end up and analyze the following theater plays: Oedipus – Anti Oedipus (Οιδίπους, αντί-Οιδίπους, 2004) by George Veltsos, The killer of Laius and the craves (Ο δολοφόνος του Λαΐου και τα κοράκια, 2007) by Marios Pontikas, Jocasta (Ιοκάστη, 2007) by Yannis Kontrafouris, Oedi-nous (Οιδί-νους, 2016) by Thanasis Triaridis and The sweet tyranny of Oedipus (Η Γλυκιά Τυραννία του Οιδίποδα, 2016) which is a stage adaptation of the original Oedipus the King under the direction of Maria Protopappa. Last but not least, two cinematographic versions are added: Strella (A woman’s way, 2009) by Panos Koutras and Blood (Αίμα, 2013) by Diamantis Karanastasis, based on the unpublished theatrical play of Marianna Kalbari New Blood (Νέο Αίμα, 2004). This thesis aims to illustrate the evolution of Oedipus form above all representations focusing on intertextuality, trends, originality, boldness and creativity of each variation and to study whether it succeed to connect the past with the present
