Attitudes of students and teachers toward Syrian, Afghan and Iraqi refugees/ migrants with relation to social distance and ethnocentrism
Summary:
In the last years Greece in the middle of the economical crisis has become the starting point of a flow of refugees and migrants. A large percentage of them regards children and adolescents, many of them are already attending classes in Greek schools. The aim of this research was the investigation of the attitudes of Greek students that study in faculties of education, as well as the attitudes of Greek teachers that work in public schools as regards the current flow of Syrian, Afghan and Iraqi refugees/ migrants with relation to social distance and ethnocentrism. The participants of the survey were 92 students studying in faculties of education and 80 teachers who work in public schools of primary and secondary education within county of Attiki. The participants answered the questionnaire “Personality and Attitudes” of Newmann & Sram, which was translated into Greek language using the method of double translation. The results revealed a high correlation between the attitudes toward immigrants/refugees, ethnocentrism and social distance. Teachers tend to have more ethnocentric beliefs and more social distance toward immigrants than the students. Interesting was the fact that participants who declare themselves to be very religious tend to have higher levels of ethnocentrism and more social distance toward immigrants than those who declare themselves to be disinterested as regards their affiliation with religion or atheists.
