Summary:
Abstract
This diploma thesis deals with the social phenomenon of school bullying, which is increasingly assuming vast proportions and as a result it already constitutes a global phenomenon. Through a theoretical approach of this phenomenon, we try to give a clear and comprehensible definition of bullying, in comparison to teasing, and to find the basic elements that compose it. Reference is made to the forms it can take, to the profile of the child who intimidate (bully) and the one who is bullied (victim) and as well as to the consequences that it has. The causes of its occurrence are analyzed in detail, such as the basic personal characteristics, the family background, the school ethos and the bystanders’ role, the chosen school policy on bullying, the role of peers, the educational climate and the general social-cultural environment. The criminology approach of school bullying is based on the social control theory and the one of social disorganization. In addition to these, reference is made to the methods of prevention and intervention, while emphasis is placed to the whole school approach and the Professor D. Olweus programme. The role of the educators in the shaping of positive school climate, through the students’ involvement in school activities and the selection of the humanistic methods to deal with the bully are clearly illustrated. In conclusion, the thesis develops the concept of the restorative justice and the school based mediation, while good practices of Greece and other European countries are highlighted.
