Petitions to the King in Ptolemaic Egypt
Summary:
The present Master thesis focuses on the petitions of Ptolemaic period, which we find in papyri and inscriptions. The material under examination consists of 259 petitions to the King (ἐντεύξεις). After a brief introduction on the petitions, my thesis continues with three units. In the first of them I try to categorize the petitions using their theme as a criterion. In the second unit I examine the “rhetoric” of petitions. Particularly I have selected to examine the petitions, which present a greater interest in the argumentation and techniques, which the petitioners use, in order to move the addressee of the petition. Despite the fact that a lot of the petitions have a strict structure, there are also some petitions, which do not conform to this rule. These petitions convey the feeling of injustice of the petitioners. He/she tries to emphasize his/her weakness and present himself/herself as the victim of the accuser's wickedness. The petitioner narrates often with detail and vividness the facts (ἐνάργεια), so as to present them with plausibility and persuasiveness. Furthermore, the petitioner points to the King that his interests are also being harmed due to the injustice of the accuser. It is claimed that the petitions to the King can be adduced as a testimony to the existence of rhetorical education in Egypt during the Hellenistic period. The last unit of my thesis is devoted to the valuable information about Ptolemaic society, which the petitions to the King offer us.
