Summary:
This paper will focus on teaching the Greek language to English-speaking adults through the use of a program based on Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI).
In particular, it focuses on the practical training of users in Grammar issues of the Greek Language, aiming at learning the "Noun" chapter of the Greek Grammar, given the difficulty English-speaking users have to fully understand concepts and morphological characteristics such as genus, declension, and case, in view of the differences of English in relation to the Greek language.
Different language texts of varying difficulty in sublanguage fields of special or general interest (e.g. medical, technical, journalistic) are presented to the users in order for them to identify the genus, the case, and the number form of the nouns to be evaluated. It examines the way in which the audiovisual material is presented, combining text and images relevant to the noun to be evaluated, along with the auditory presentation of the word.
In addition, it examines how to evaluate each response by direct intervention of the system with praise (e.g. Excellent!, Great job!, Super!, Keep it up!) or feedback in case of error (Oops! I think it's not the correct answer! Try to remember it next time!) via an animation that is convincing, flexible, friendly, and familiar to the user (Lipi, et al., 2008). This is achieved by appropriate user modeling, but also by defining the Sublanguage in order to adapt the behavior of the System to the users' needs and achieve greater System efficiency and effectiveness (User Modelling, Usability Requirements: Wiegers, 2005).
In addition, a study is conducted on the design of a virtual speaker chosen by the user, who is proposed to have human form and characteristics, who looks vivid through the use of hand movements and facial grimaces (Bates, 1994; Aydin, 2008), paying special attention to tone, intensity and timbre of voice (Nass & Brave, 2005). The choice is given so that users can select their own "teacher", who inspires greater trust and familiarity, in order to work with the program more pleasantly and efficiently.
