"Maniat and Cretan Laments: Ethnographic approaches to the role of women"
Summary:
The subject of this paper is the tradition of mourning laments in the geographical areas of Mani and Crete, viewed both as a ritual and as an act of women. The two basic elements of this subject are: death and gender. Lamenting as a field of study, is examined here in three ways: i) as a specific cultural event with a psychological and emotional impact on the participants, ii) as a carrier of social work and iii) as a practice of redemption and expansion. The aim is to examine the issue from the point of view of social anthropology and to examine the role and meaning of women in this tradition.
