Relational Identity and Acculturation of immigrant adolescent students
Summary:
The present research aims to explore how first and second generation’s immigrants approach the culture of the host country and the culture of the country of origin. An additional goal is to study the development of relational identity and thus to search for possible relationships between acculturation and relational identity.
The sample of the present survey consists of 1041 teenage students, of whom 640 are immigrants, who attend the second grade of High School The total sample consisted of 552 boys and 489 girls, while the sample of immigrant adolescents consists of 307 boys and 287 girls. For the measurement of culture, adolescents were given a customized version of the Nguyen and von Eye scale (2002). For the relational identity measurement, the U-MICS relational identity scale of Crocetti et al. (2008).
The results of the research are in accordance with the literature. Gender was not found to differentiate the cultural orientation of adolescents, while second-generation adolescent immigrants are more likely to opt for relations with wider society than first-generation adolescent immigrants. The country of birth differentiates adolescent immigrants only regarding the ethnic orientation. As far as relational identity is concerned, the effect of gender was found to be statistically significant in relation to the dimensions of relational identity. However, there were no statistically significant differences between nationalities, migratory status and immigrant generation as regards the dimensions of relational identity.
Finally, further research and design of interventions that take into account factors such as gender, immigration and the cultural background of the participants are needed, with the aim of forming a coherent relational identity.
