Safety of offshore oil and gas operations: The Directive 2013/30 EU and its imprint on the liability regime
Summary:
The present thesis deals with the Directive 2013/30 EU, regarding the safety of offshore oil and gas operations, and its effect on the existing liability regime.
Firstly, the lack of an international cohesive legislative framework with regard to the offshore activity is being demonstrated and therefore why it had to be enacted and how it could contribute to secure the safety of these activities. Furthermore, the individual provisions of the Directive are being assessed and an attempt is being made, to indicate those points which constitute the added value in the legal nexus of the regulations of the offshore oil and gas activities industry, without however omitting to evaluate and to raise the possible practical problems arising from its application.
To conclude, whether or not and to what extent the Directive will henceforth affect the very important issue of liability which may arise from such activities is being examined, in which way and if it actually constitutes a significant addition to the legal “armoury” or an initiative with a limited contribution to the legal problems which may arise, in case of a major offshore accident.
