Summary:
Abstract
The purpose of current study is to investigated the relationship between subjective well-being and academic self-concept in greek language in adolescents. A total of 279 students in grades 8 and 9 participated in this study. Students completed a questionnaire of subjective well-being (BSW/ Y) and a questionnaire of their ideas of theirs skills in this course. According to the factor analysis of the subjective-well being questionnaire, the subjective well-being consists of six sub-factors (Positive attitude towards life, Problems, Physical problems, Self esteem, Depressive mood and Life satisfaction) and two general factors (Satisfaction and Feeling of sickness). The academic self-concept of students was examined as a system of cognitive and thymic factors. More specifically, four different aspects of the two dimensions of the academic self-concept were examined, Self-perception, Self-esteem, Self-Efficacy and others’ perception of their abilities. The findings showed a moderate positive connection between the academic self-concept factors with positive factors of subjective well-being and moderate negative affinity to the negative factors of well-being, except factor Problems. Moreover, additional statistically significant links were appeared between the factors and the demographic data. In addition, there are statistically significant differences between the means of sex and age in the subjective well-being, whereas were not in the academic self-concept. Finally, father’s educational level and family status appear to be related to the subjective well-being, while mother's educational level and participation in extracurricular activities are related to the academic self-concept. Finally, regression analysis of subjective well-being, life satisfaction and feeling of sickness, of the factors of academic self-concept and demographic factors, demonstrates small percentage of predictability and further research is needed.
