"Seven Songs to Live" Sephardic Music of Salonika, a tradition that continues ...
Summary:
The preservation of the Sephardic musical tradition in the present days by the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, has some particularities since this community faced a violent attempt of extermination by Nazism during the World War II. This attempt resulted in scattering information and in some cases losing material concerning everyday life and specifically music life that took place in the previous centuries in the Jewish neighborhoods, in the Synagogues and at the social events of Thessaloniki. Our research in the field focuses on oral tradition containing information, songs, cultural events etc. which is our basic sources. This is achieved indicatively from seven Holocaust survivors/rescued people through their published narrations. Their avocation with Sephardic music, in conjunction with the everyday life, their impressions derived from the communication through singing and through their religious practices, give us the opportunity to depict emotions. Emphasizing on the cultural activities of the community that aim in preserving the collective memory, but also writing down seven songs, display a fraction of the effort being made for the recovery of this historic community through strong tradition. It is simultaneously a hope for the continuity of life.
