Summary:
The present work aims to investigate basic aspects from the course of teaching Greek folk music over the centuries. Its two branches, church and folk music, despite being in co-operation and have significant similarities, they also present differences regarding genre and therefore to the way of teaching. For this reason, the characteristics of each genre and their historical boundaries are investigated. Consideration follows to the teaching of folk music that basically takes place outside public education until the creation of music schools (1988). Music schools are an important field of research, since it is the first time of establishing in them the institutionally integrated teaching of Greek folk music within the framework of public education. Thus, teaching takes on particular relevance regarding content, instructive means and method.
On one hand, the methodological approach was carried out through the research of bibliographical references. On the other hand, the author's multi-year educational experience in music schools, where he teaches, has been used.
This research procedure contributes to record the course of instruction throughout the centuries. Also, it attempts for the first time, to adjust the principal didactic and pedagogical methods in the teaching of folk music.
In addition, the work historically records the teaching resources while exploring the usefulness of newer teaching means in folk music.
The usefulness of teaching traditional music in general, is reinforced by the views of ancient philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, as well as contemporary thinkers such as Rousseau and Stravinsky.
In conclusion, there is an attempt for suggestions and interventions on the main parameters of the modern teaching of Greek traditional and folk music and on the problems associated with it. Further systematic exploration and resolution will smooth the teaching process.
The inclusion in the appendix of elements of biology associated with human voice was considered a necessary resource for the teaching of this vocal music.
