Investigation of the surface heat fluxes parameterization of COSMO model in a case of an intense cyclogenesis in the Mediterranean
Summary:
In this study the impact of the sea surface roughness on surface heat fluxes was investigated, during the development of an intense case of cyclogenesis that took place in western Mediterranean. Three different model runs were performed with the use of the operational non-hydrostatic atmospheric model COSMO of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, modifying only the value of the parameter rat_sea, which is associated with the sea surface roughness (laminar layer) and has been proved to significantly affect the simulation of the surface heat fluxes. The predictive values of the COSMO model were compared to ECMWF reanalysis data, in order to identify the main variations in the major isobaric levels of the atmosphere and also the surface fluxes variations during the evolution of the cyclogenic episode. The examination of the dynamic processes confirmed the interaction between baroclinic and diabatic processes that contributed to the enhancement of this cyclogenic episode. The results of the comparison of the three simulations showed that there was a relatively limited response of the system to the change in surface flow fluxes concerning the deepening rates in the low center, since the system seemed to be controlled mainly by the synoptic conditions prevailing in the upper atmosphere.
