Summary:
This research paper attempts to establish criteria for both to record and to evaluate electronic terminological resources available on the Internet, which are necessary for the translation process, especially for the translation of specialized texts (and not only), and the terminological search and documentation are part of the translator’s everyday tasks. Their critic study will contribute both to the exploration of the theoretical reflection and to the improvement of the resources.
Therefore, after having defined the domain of terminology and its inherent features (concept, term, resource, etc.), criteria were established for the identification, classification and evaluation of the terminological content of web pages, since the Internet is an uncontrolled source of information and it does not only serve translation purposes. The translator must be able to find the appropriate information, based on qualitative specifications, objective criteria and measurable characteristics.
More specifically, the research focuses on the French-Greek language pair because of the translators’ difficulty in finding adequate and reliable resources, contrary to the language combination of English-Greek, for which there is an abundance of bilingual and multilingual resources. The relevant research on the Internet has recorded approximately 110 available resources, with free access, covering a wide range of domains such as: cooking - flavors - spices, sports, fish and fisheries, health - medicine, environment - ecology, law terminology, religion, (human) rights, economy - statistics etc. Recording of findings formed the basis for the creation of the equivalent page on the Scoop.it electronic platform, which will be constantly enriched with new material from now on.
Therefore, the finding and evaluation of electronic terminological resources are useful both for professional translators and for the didactics of translation and terminology.
