Measuring the efficiency of Greek public hospitals
Summary:
The aim of this study is to measure the efficiency of 81 Greek NHS hospitals for 2015.They were further divided into sub-groups with common characteristics, which allowed comparisons to be carried out with increased homogeneity. Those characteristics were the educational character (university or not), their size and their geographical location. Three inputs – (physicians, nurses and hospital beds) - and three outputs (bed-days, surgeries and outpatient visits) were chosen as comparison variables. An input-oriented DEA model was used for the assessment of technical and scale efficiency and for the identification of returns to scale. The main finding was a high efficiency, while the differences in the DEA efficiency between the sub-groups, found to be statistically insignificant.
