The social and emotional status of pre-adolescent and adolescent children with ADHD: Children’s and mothers’ views
Summary:
The purpose of this research was to investigate the views of pre-adolescent and adolescent children with ADHD and of their mothers as well, in order to identify the strengths and difficulties faced by these children in the social and emotional field. More specifically, differences in the children’s' and mothers' opinions about the social and emotional status of children with ADHD and children of normal development, who took part in this study, were investigated. Moreover, age and gender differences among children of both groups were studied. The methological tool was the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The sample included 102 children (51 with ADHD and 51 without ADHD), as well as their mothers. The results showed differences in the social and emotional status between children with ADHD and children without ADHD, differences in children’s and mothers’ opinions and age differences among children of both groups on the same subject as well. Research findings enrich the pre-existing literature and they are expected to help design and apply educational programs of social and emotional nature, with activities aimed at enhancing the social and emotional development of children, improving their social skills and changing their psychosocial environment at school and home.
