Digital storytelling as means of adult students' of Greek as a foreign language empowerment of digital literacy, in virtual learning environments
Summary:
Digital Storytelling combines traditional storytelling with contemporary digital tools creating an artifact that borrows from the assets of both. Recent research usually assesses the influence of Digital Storytelling on motivation, Digital Literacy in all of its manifestations, and the levels of engagement of the perspective students. The contradistinction between digital natives and immigrants (Prensky, 2001a) is also examined, during the implementation of Digital Storytelling. In this particular case study, that we conducted, we focused on the development of the digital literacy skills of students of Greek as a foreign language. Our intervention took place fully online on a Learning Management System and we used assessment tools such as questionnaires, observation and interviews in an effort to measure the empowerment of the participants’ digital literacy skills. At the same time, results were also drawn regarding their improvement in terms of their level of Greek language and their engagement in an asynchronous learning environment. An attempt was also made to investigate if a dichotomy between digital natives and immigrants really exists.
