The Latin persecution from Constantinople during the Comnenus administration. Causes and effects.
Summary:
The present thesis examines the causes and the effects of the Latin persecution from Constantinople during the governing of the Comnenus dynasty. Through this prism, the role of the Italian merchants during the First Fall of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in 1204 is, also, examined.
In the first chapter, the situation of the empire and its relationships with the independent Italian maritime cities till the 12th century are examined. In this framework, the chapter includes the reasons and the procedures through which these cities obtained their first privileges from the Byzantine emperors. The Latin communities formed in Constantinople and, particularly, their exact location, extent and what they included are, also, presented. Finally, the financial mercantile activities of the Byzantine Empire are elaborated on, including the participation of the Latins.
The Latin persecution from the Empire follows. At first, the sequence of events and the causes of the first persecution ordered by Manuel in 1171 are analysed. The range of this persecution against the Venetians residing in the Empire, the secrecy and effectiveness of the Byzantine administration are utterly impressive. Furthermore, the causes of the 1182 massacre fomented by Andronicus right before ascending the throne are examined. The people of Constantinople attacked the Latins residing in the Empire helplessly expressing their hatred towards them.
In the third chapter, the political financial and social effects of these persecutions are explored. Besides, the emperor’s attempts to normalize the relationships of the Empire and the Italian maritime cities and to reclaim its diplomatic relationships with the West in general are cited as well as the events that led to the First Fall of Constantinople in 1204 by the Fourth Crusade.
Finally, the thesis concludes that the causes of the persecution were obviously political and not financial. In the first case, Manuel’s aim was to achieve an alliance with the German emperor while, in the second case, Andronicus’ aim was to ascend the throne. As a result, the Italian maritime cities trusted no longer the Byzantines’ commitment to abide by the formal agreements. Τhe Byzantines, on the contrary, were deliberately deceiving the one maritime republic against the other. Therefore, the piracy was flourishing and the trade was not safe. From this point of view, the fall of Byzantine Empire was a reasonable outcome of the west requirements. Just a Latin empire established in Constantinople could secure the West interests in a place which was of vital importance for the West.
