Development of mobile application to support self-Management of patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Systemic lupus erythematosus, is a multi-systemic disease that can affect vital organs, as
well as, skin and joints. The disease needs chronic monitoring by doctors of various specialties
and other health professionals. Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, should
be actively involved in this chronic follow-up, by properly taking their medication and by
recording symptoms that may occur or may indicate an outbreak of the disease. An appli -
cation for smart mobile devices, could be an important ally in this endeavor.
The global prevalence of mobile phones makes them a powerful platform for providing personalized
health care delivered to the patient's convenience. Several studies have documented
the effectiveness, potential and challenges of using mobile phones to improve
health outcomes. More and more indications, show that the use of mobile phones can improve
self-management and clinical outcomes.
An application for smart mobile devices was designed and implemented in this project, to
support disease self-management for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The
main goal of the application is to help the patients with disease management and to improve
clinical efficacy, ensure a better level of health and, of course, reduce costs because
good monitoring can prevent a disease outbreak.
Firstly, the disease and its systemic nature are presented. Chapter 2 describes the
concept of self-management of chronic illness. In chapter 3 reference is made to the definition
of mhealth and the applications developed for disease self-management . At the end,
reference is made to existing similar applications. The fourth chapter begins with the study
of the implementation of the application, presents the tools used in the development of the
and refers to the Android operating system and App Inventor. In the 5th chapter is presented
the implementation of the application with images and explanations for its functions. Finally, in chapter 6, the conclusions and the future development possibilities
