Pottery workshop from ancient Potidaea-Kassandreia in Chalkidiki
Summary:
The thesis topic are the remains of two ceramics workshops, one archaic and one late Hellenistic, which were revealed in 1994-1995 by the rescue excavation at Nea Potidaia. This is a detailed presentation of unpublished archaeological data and pottery findings from an important ancient city of Chalkidiki, which provides information on potters’ technological choices at the north part of ancient Greece and enriches the list of recorded types of ceramic kilns. At the same time, the study investigates the interconnections with other ceramic workshops in northern and southern Greece and contributes on the debate about local pottery production in Macedonia. Finally, the attempt to reconstruct the history and modus operatum of Potidaia-Kassandreia ceramic workshops contributes to the knowledge of the ancient town’s topography, which remains largely unknown, since the ancient settlement lies entirely underneath the modern town and only rescue excavations can restore the blurry image we have.
The thesis is developed in eight chapters, the first one being the preface. The second one is a brief overview of the history and topography of the ancient Potidaia-Kassandreia, while the third one is a presentation of the excavation data and an attempt to interpret it in archaeological and historical context. In the fourth chapter, the excavation’s ceramic kilns are described, commented on their constructional characteristics and classified according to modern typology systems. In the fifth chapter, the structures and building walls that define a late Hellenistic ceramic workshop are presented, while in the sixth chapter selected pottery shreds and other ceramic findings related to the two kilns are discussed in order to determine the dating of the two workshops, the specialization of their production and their stylistic influences. The seventh chapter presents the conclusions and each ceramic workshop is analyzed as an autonomous unit. Furthermore, the workshops’ position is commented on in relation to the general topography of the ancient Potidaia-Kassandreia. The last chapter is the catalogue of pottery shreds and ceramic findings, with details on exact dimensions and tracking data followed by a rough dating based on other well-dated examples. Finally, the three appendixes present the sources of all figures and maps, catalogue the Greek and foreign bibliography and provide archival photographs of the excavation along with modern colour photographs of the findings.
