The Sculptor Pasiteles and his School
Summary:
After the establishment of the Roman Empire, the most talented Greek artists were invited at the courts of wealthy Roman citizens so as to carry out their orders, fulfilling their desires for the creation and collection of works of high quality and craftsmanship. Sculptural production was at its peak, mostly influenced by the authentic works of the 5th and 4th centuries B.C., the most distinctive traits of which were selectively blended so as to produce new classicistic creations.
The aim of this Master thesis is to take into consideration the textual and archaeological testimonies of the life and works of the sculptor Pasiteles who was active at Rome during the first part of the first century B.C. He was a versatile sculptor working both in stone, metal, and precious materials, such as gold and ivory. He was also interested in the connoisseurship of the artistic creation of the previous periods. Even though well-known at his times, few ancient written sources survive and all his works are gone. However the stylistic identity of his school can be understood by two inscribed works from two disciples of him, Stephanos and Menelaos. These works served as the basis of a large number of copies and imitations in individual statues, groups, torsos, heads and statuettes which are collected in an extensive catalogue.
All those statues were used mainly for decorative purposes, specifically in houses and villas of Roman citizens showing off both their prosperity and their high level of education within the context of a noble competition with others.
The research expands into both the lives and works of Stephanos and Menelaos, the period of activity of whom reaches the middle of the first century A.D. and offers a reevaluation specifically in some acknowledged views regarding the identification of their sculptures with personalities from myth and tragedy.
