The Freudian subject and the terms of his autonomy.
Summary:
The present essay is primarily concerned with the terms under which the Freudian subject is constituted. This paper takes into consideration that the Freudian work is mainly divided into two separate periods: the first one (1895-1919) where the unconscious part of the human psyche rises and the second one (1920-1939) where the death instincts are introduced thus leading to the formation of the cultural Superego.
In this study, merely through psychoanalytic concepts, we are compelled to reconstruct ourselves a subject theory, taking into account that such a theory is not already present in the Freudian work per se.
In opposition to what the philosophical tradition of his time seems to discuss, the Freudian perspective refuses to comprehend the subject solely as an agent of Reason. Freud introduces the unconscious, which seems to be established through the elaboration of the dream. The unconscious is now located right to the centre of the human psyche and appears to be the main cause of its developments. This particular distinction of the human psyche between the conscious and the unconscious now brings forth the matter of a dialectical constitution of the subject, since in this perspective the subject is defined mainly through the intermediation of these systems. In this context we attempt to investigate on the one hand the question of a dialectical formation of the subject as well as the terms of his autonomy, and on the other hand we evaluate this ambiguous Freudian theory as a whole.
