Summary:
The subject of this diploma thesis, which consists of six chapters, is the beliefs of the students of Greek as C2 level A2 regarding the teaching and knowledge of metaphor. The theoretical framework adopted is based on the principles of cognitive linguistics.
Various methods have been formulated to teach a language as C2 / SL, the most prevalent of which is the Communication approach, which also emphasizes the context.
During language learning learning, vocabulary plays an important role. As far as the structure of the cognitive dictionary of a C2 / SL student is concerned, this consists of two linguistic systems that are autonomous but dependent on one another. It is worth noting that for several years the vocabulary was on the sidelines, as opposed to now being at the center of the research.
One of the vocabulary components is metaphor that is of utmost importance because our perceptual system is essentially metaphorical. Transport must be explicitly taught from the initial levels, namely from level A2, as they are an integral part of a language.
Many researchers have talked about so-called "metaphoric competence" and the factors on which it depends. Metaphor is also linked to the cultural background of the natural speaker. Also, gestures can help in learning them.
It is worth highlighting that several methods have been identified for the teaching of metaphors in C2 / SL without satisfactory results.
In this context, a questionnaire was created in order to examine the perceptions of Greek students as C2 level A2 regarding metaphor. The excel program was used to process the data. The findings showed that learners believe that metaphor is taught little while being used extensively during the lesson and therefore they do not know many translations in Greek. At the same time, they believe that metaphor is linked to culture and that gestures help them to understand it. At the same time, the knowledge of more and more foreign languages seemed to have some role in facilitating students, while something similar is not observed with age and time of residence in Greece.
Consequently, a teaching method should be developed in which transport will be a key part of the educational process and will be taught explicitly at the level of A2.
