Summary:
The present survey examined the conceptions and experiences of Primary School teachers regarding the contribution of humour to the creation of a positive climate in the classroom and the maintenance of the student’s attention. Furthermore, the expression of humour through non-verbal behavior as well as the effect of the teacher’s aggressive humour on the climate of the classroom was examined. 12 teachers participated (2 men and ten women) from public Primary Schools of Peristeri, Attiki. A quality methodology was applied, and in this context the participants were submitted to a semi-structured interview and observation of one of their teachings. The majority of the participating teachers had a positive attitude towards the development of humour derived from their interview answers. Some of them pinpointed the dangers caused by the improper use of the humour by the teachers. However, what arose from the observations is that almost half of the participants (58%) used humour to such a degree that influence that climate of the classroom in a positive way and attracts the student’s interest. The other 42% avoided the systematic use of verbal and non-verbal humour to such a degree that affects the communication in the classroom significantly. There was no observation of any sign of aggressive humour from the participants, who criticized it as ineffective means of class management. Also, the observation showed that participants’ display of humor took place in combination with a style of teaching based on students’ participation. The findings of the present study have important implications for the implementation of educational programmes and seminars aiming at developing the teachers’ communicational skills.
