Investigation of the relationship between metacognitive awareness of reading strategies, anxiety and self-esteem among adolescent students
Summary:
The current study investigates the relationship between metacognitive awareness of reading strategies, anxiety and self-esteem among adolescent students and was conducted using a correlational method. Two hundred and thirty six students of 8th and 9th grade from public schools located in Athens, were concluded in this study (M=14,5 years old). For the purposes of the study 3 questionnaires were administered: the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Questionnaire (MARSI), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The results revealed that self-reported highly skilled readers use, in general, more metacognitive reading strategies than poor readers. More specifically, they use Problem Solving Strategies more frequently than the other strategies. Moreover, the results showed a low positive relationship between anxiety and self-esteem. Additional analyses revealed that girls reported higher levels of positive self-esteem and anxiety (state and trait) in relation to educational level of their parents, comparing to boys. The ultimate goal of the study is to raise the awareness of students and teachers about metacognitive reading strategies and to pinpoint the need for further investigation concerning the pattern of self-esteem and anxiety.
