Grotta, Naxos (1949-1985): a palimpsest of cycladic archaeology. Research methods/modern evaluation
Summary:
Grotta constitutes the northern coastal area of the Chora of Naxos. The site was excavated partially under the auspices of the Archaeological Company from 1949 to 1985. To begin with, the surveys were conducted by the direction of N. Kontoleon (1949-1974) and after his death, in 1975, the direction took over his student and after 1961, his partner in the excavations of Grotta, V. Lambrinoudakis (1976-1985). The entirety of surveys not only close to the coast, but also in the major area of Grotta, made the long-term history of this location known, by bringing into light evidence of Late Neolithic period, until the 14th century AD.
This present essay is based mainly on the study of the excavated evidence of the two excavators (diaries, indexes, drawings, photographs, etc.) but also on all publications that concern the site. Furthermore, at the end of the essay, an appendix of interviews that were got from the three researchers who either participated in the excavation (V. Lambrinoudakis) or got in touch with the excavation of Grotta via the institutional role (Chr. Doumas and Ph. Papadopoulou-Zapfeiropoulou), is listed.
The essay is separated into four individual chapters. The first of them constitutes the composition of data and to this fact the history of Grotta is mentioned, as it occurs from the so far excavated data. The second chapter is referring to the chronicle of the excavation. In this chapter, the course of investigations per year is mentioned. The description is relied on the exact position (location, plot) of the excavations per year, on the most important findings of each year – non-movable and portable- as well as on any information which is referred to the archives or to the annual reports of both of the excavators and they concern the outcome of the investigations. The third and the most extensive chapter of the essay contains the examination of excavations' inferences of Kontoleon and Lambrinoudakis, the study of theoretical and practical tools that were used by both of the excavators as well the difficulties that they faced. In this chapter, a first comparison of the methods of the two excavators is attempted. The fourth chapter is about the examination of the mutual relation between the excavation and the scientific community on the one hand and the local community on the other. Through the citation of a series of issues, in this chapter there is an effort not only to include this particular excavation in its historical context, but also to find out the attitude of the local community.
Finally, through the data analysis, the essay aims to the examination of the excavation of Grotta as a scientific fact included both in the time it was created and in the social field.
