Flexibility and Insecurity: a case study on rented employees in the field of IT services
Summary:
The thesis at hand is titles “Flexibility and Insecurity: a case study on rented employees in the field of IT services”. It debates a contemporary version of flexible labor, that of renting employees and sets out to find how the quality of said employee’s labor is affected by the special circumstances that arise within this situation. In doing so, the thesis attempts to illuminate the matter in such a way as to document a series of uncertain social circumstances the employees are exposed to due to the temporality of their labor, but also how this shapes the way the perceive this labor.
The most important findings indicate the unstable and unpredictable nature of labor, the extended use of rented personnel in order to cover long-term needs of corporations, but also the inability of employees to obtain solid technical skills. An interesting observation however, reveals that the employees that participated in the research, do in fact consider this type of labor as a helpful experience regarding certain aspects, mostly because it allows them to access the job market while at the same time obtain work stamps and working experience.
