Summary:
Over the last years Turkey has become the topic of numerous debates, whether it fulfils the preconditions or it should be selected to become an energy hub. The main reason for these debates is Turkey’s unique geographical position, between major producing regions (such as Russia, the Caspian Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean Basin and the Middle East) and a strategic consuming market, (such as the European Union). In addition, over the last decade, Turkey’s role with regard to energy transit has been mainly associated with the natural gas transportation via the country. Two basic factors led to this consideration; the former is the fact that Turkey has become an expanding natural gas market. The latter is related with the recent attempt on behalf of the European Union to diversify its natural gas imports from Russia, which constitutes its principal natural gas supplier. At first, the paper makes a presentation of the oil and natural gas pipelines which are currently in operation in Turkey and also of the actual overall Turkish energy policy. Moreover, a reference is made to the most important energy projects and the possible energy co-operations, which are actually under debate in Turkey. Furthermore, the energy relation between the European Union and Turkey is to be examined. In addition, the paper focuses on the strategy of the U.S and Russia in terms of the energy transit in the region and the role which Turkey could play and also on Turkey’s capability on finding alternative energy suppliers between its neighboring countries, which hold proved oil and/or natural gas reserves. Finally, an attempt is made in order to come to a conclusion if Turkey could become an energy hub, in the short or in the long term
