Acquisition of Greek compounds from typically developing children and children with Specific Language Impairment
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is the study of the acquisition of nominal compounds of the type noun + noun by Greek-speaking typically developing (TD) children and children with specific language impairment (SLI). Specifically, this thesis examines the detection of discrepancies between the groups above. Moreover, it attempts to determine the errors observed in their productions in order to contribute to a better understanding of their profile. In order to achieve the goals as mentioned above, a compounds production task was given to 6 children with SLI (mean age 5;3) and to 12 typically developing children, divided into 2 subgroups: (a) a subgroup of 6 chronological age matched children (mean age 5;2) and (b) a subgroup of 6 language age matched children (mean age 3;9). The findings suggested that the TD children perform better as far as the structuring of compounds is concerned in comparison to children with SLI. Nevertheless, the former, just like the latter, face difficulties upon certain grammatical and syntactic rules, like the correct ordering of the compounds’ constituents.
The current research virtually aspires to enrich our knowledge as far as the acquisition of compounding, particularly in relevance to the Greek language, which until now has not been thoroughly investigated by the existing literature.
