Stance and argumentation in posts about referendum on July 5th 2015: The case of Facebook
Summary:
This dissertation aims to investigate the discourse strategies employed on Facebook posts written during the period of the Greek referendum, that is July 5th, 2015. This referendum was a historical moment for Greece and it had significant socioeconomic consequences. Facebook, being one of the most popular social networking sites, played a crucial role during that period, since Facebook users conducted plenty of discussions in order to express their stances and arguments, while trying to convince others about their positions.
The analysis is based on the discourse-historical approach, which is developed by Reisigl and Wodak (2009), focusing on the discourse strategies of reference, predication and argumentation by examining personal deixis, evaluation and topoi respectively. The aim is to reveal the users’ stance in relation to the groups they form, the characteristics they attribute to them and the topoi applied to justify their arguments.
After examining extensive discussions below Facebook posts, I concluded that Facebook users rely on the discursive construction of Us vs Them forming two prevalent bipolar groups, the first being for - against referendum and the second being Yes voters - No voters. The second group is found in most of the discussions and influences the users’ stances. Yes voters want Greece to remain in the European Union and they focus on the future negative consequences of a No vote, while No voters underline the necessity of an independent Greece and focus on the negative results of the European and Greek collaboration in the past. The most prevalent topoi are those of uselessness, responsibility and usefulness which are used to shape, on the one hand, a negative and dangerous framework including the decisions and actions of the out group and, on the other hand, favorable conditions for the in group’s choices. In conclusion, the discourse of Facebook users is based on ideological schemas which reflect and reproduce a divisive climate.
