Translated title:
“Bioethics and Biolaw through Literature”: When the imagination of literature meets the reality of science
Summary:
In a time of rapid technological progress and scientific advancement through which for the first time it is possible to alter the constitution of living beings, mankind finds it almost impossible to procure solutions to newly-created ethical dilemmas through the use of traditional judicial systems. As fantasy becomes reality and the impossible becomes feasible, the emerging scientific disciplines of bioethics and biolaw are called upon to provide answers to these modern questions and turn to the field of literature and to the minds of the authors who have already envisioned a world in flux. This dissertation is based on the translation of two essays taken from the book Bioethics and Biolaw through Literature, edited by Daniela Carpi, which is a compilation of texts that delve into the themes of bioethics, law and literature. In the first part of the essay, some key concepts of these are introduced, as well as the connections between them, followed in the second part by the translation of the two essays as part of the presentation. In the third part, there is an analysis of the essay, as a hybrid type of text which combines both literary and scientific elements of writing, followed by some explanatory thoughts of the choice of middle ground theory as the suitable translation method for these two essays that are so similar and yet so similar. Lastly, some of choices of the translator are explained combined with a few textual examples of the translation process.
