Summary:
The term stress refers to a state of threatened or perceived as threatened homeostasis of an organism. The organism’s response to stress is conducted through a specific mechanism, called the stress response system. Stress exposure has a big impact on an organism, especially when the exposure takes place during critical developmental periods. One of the key mediators of the stress response system is CRH (Corticotropin Releasing Hormone). CRH is a neuropeptide consisting of 41 amino acids that acts on the pituary regulating the secretion of ACTH and glucocorticoids, and on extra-hypothalamic CNS centers regulating various response mechanisms to stress. The CRH-peptide family and their receptors showcase a wide distribution in the brain and peripheral tissues. There are two main types of CRH receptors, CRHR1 and CRHR2. The wide distribution of CRH-like peptides and their receptors – along with the receptors’ various subtypes – indicate that their actions are very significant in species’ adaptation to the environment and survival. CRH’s actions on a number of physiological mechanisms and on a variety of brain regions are great research topics, while studies on CRHRs’ function can help uncover new therapeutic applications for a great number of stress-related diseases.
