Translating Eddie Lenihan’s "The Dream Hour" from Gruesome Irish Tales for Children; an Analysis of Irish Folklore and Storytelling Tradition

“The Dream Hour”, a tale written by Eddie Lenihan, describes the sufferings of Ireland’s mythological hero, Fionn MacCumhail, when the figure he dreams in his nightmares calls for a real-life confrontation. The purpose of this thesis is to dissect the function of storytelling in the preservation of Irish folklore and culture and how this can be transferred in the Greek translation. Initially, some evidence of cultural preservation activism as depicted in the tale is discussed after some references to the background of European and Irish storytelling and folklore traditions are made. Moreover, an explanation of the psychology behind the hero’s dreaming is approached. At the same time, a translation of the tale in Greek has also been realised, with the purpose of providing material for a translational analysis of the procedure.
