Social Skills and Intellectual Disability
Summary:
This study is a meta-analysis in the field of the development of social skills, with regard to the population group of people with Intellectual Development Disorder. In the international arena, the need to develop social skills for people with disabilities has been proven, and it is a large field of research interest. The promotion of these skills is inextricably linked with factors that affect the quality of life of the individual. Failure to conquer them leads to difficulties in moving to adult life and paid employment. This work has emerged as a result of the knowledge that people with Intellectual Development Disability are lagging behind the typical population in terms of the breadth and level of social skills. Also, in many cases - especially in Greece - the cultivation of these skills is neglected by the curriculum, for the benefit of a knowledge-based system. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the need for programs to develop social skills in people with intellectual developmental disorder at international level and to improve their quality of life. However, a prerequisite for setting up intervention programs is to assess these skills through weighted scales. Thus, it was considered necessary to evaluate the validity of some of the most common tools used to measure these skills. To achieve this goal, forty-eight studies have been selected, using Vineland's Adaptive Behavior Scale, the Arc's Self-Determination Scale, the Social Skills Rating System, and the Social Skills Improvement System. The method followed for meta-analysis concerns the medcalc and spss statistical programs. In order to compare the averages, t-test for a sample is used, in order to control differences between the groups. In addition, in order to check the variations within each survey, Cohen's d is used, while the Hedges g indicator is used to control the reliability of the tools and is accompanied by the schematic representation of Forest Plots. The studies to be analyzed refer to 5,479 subjects from the target group, 2,570 formally developing individuals constituting the control group and 1,584 individuals who have other disorders and are the comparison group. The age range ranges from 1 to 93 years. The studies looked at a pooled population from 14 countries. This meta-analysis with these studies attempts to evaluate the validity and reliability of the tools used, emphasizing the individual characteristics of the individual (disability, age), their intercultural dimension and the transition to work. The work with the above attempts to give a global picture of the social skills of the person with Intellectual Disability on an international level.
