Opinions of teachers in Special Vocational Education and Training Workshops about the vocational perspectives of the graduates.
Summary:
Special Vocational Education and Training Workshops were founded in 2000 with 2817/2000 Legislation and serve a large number of students in Greece, who have special educational needs or/and disability and cannot attend the curriculum of junior high school. These school units belong to Secondary Vocational Education and the students are specialized in a particular vocational field that is referred at the certificate they will receive once they graduate.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the opinions of teachers in Special Vocational Education and Training Workshops who teach a specific vocational specialty, about the vocational perspectives of the graduates. It focuses on the factors that form teacher’s expectations for their students and the contribution of Special Vocational Education and Training Workshops on the professional rehabilitation of the students. The sample was 9 teachers who teach in Special Vocational Education and Training Workshops of Attica, and the means of collecting data that was chosen was semi-structured interview.
According to the findings, teacher’s expectations are negative when a students’ disability is serious and the older the student is. However, they seem to keep high expectations when the number of students in the classroom is reduced and when school infrastructure is suitable for the workshops. Additionally they keep high expectations for those students whose family is collaborative.
Regarding the contribution of Special Vocational Education and Training Workshops on the professional rehabilitation of students, teachers mention that the knowledge offered is suitable for the student population. However, it doesn’t seem that all workshop specialties meet modern labor market demands. Additionally, it seems that the main criteria for placing students at workshops are their functionality degree, and after that come family and students’ wishes, as there are no criteria based on legislation.
It was also mentioned the need for creating a curriculum specifically for Special Vocational Education and Training Workshops, the significance of practice in workplaces, which for the time being does not take place and the meaning of a student briefing on their professional prospects, which when it takes place is superficial and with no essential student participation. Regarding the educational procedure, all teachers differentiate their teaching according to the students’ needs, as they would also do at a regular education school. However, they seem to simplify the subject matter the lower a students’ functionality level is estimated.
