Summary:
The purpose of this research is the investigation of the self-organized social
solidarity’s initiatives in Greece, and especially of the social groceries and their spherical
way of how they function. This project hopes that it will become a useful tool for people’s
awareness and sensitization of these structures and for their improvement. Moreover, this
research is a very important data base for future research.
Most of the structures that have been founded as social groceries started their
operation the last years, since economic crisis became intense in Greece. Their purpose
is to help people in need by covering the essential necessity for food. They are structures
that collect first need products which are distributed to the beneficiaries.
However, a social grocery must have ensured financing sources, in order to
achieve its basic function, to have its personnel and to have the opportunity to share its
work with the society. For this reason, except for interviews, a research was done that is
associated with their appearance in digital media, which have been absorbed in our daily
routine and have become inseparable part of public services and companies’ strategy.
During the first step of this research, phone calls were carried out so as to
communicate with the structures and to collect basic data for the research as the time of
their function and the number of beneficiaries. In this way, we could sort out the sample,
which had been derived from Organosi 2.0. Furthermore, there was a face to face
communication with people of the social groceries and the sequel of this project based
on desktop research.
The general conclusion of this project is that the institution of social groceries has
improved the system of public services and has managed to activate volunteering and
the value of offer in Greek’s heart. It can give life to those who are in real need. However,
there are many obstacles that should be overtaken in order to improve their function. In
most of the circumstances, these obstacles aren’t associated with only the structure itself,
but with the general situation which describes this country these days.
