Childhood in history textbooks in Greek Primary and Secondary Education (1964-2014)
Summary:
The word "child" refers to a biologically evolving being, but it also includes the notions of dependence, weakness and any other traits that each civilization uses to define a non-adult person. Thus, childhood is transformed into a social category that does not refer to a particular child, but to the child as a member of a group with common structural traits, with processes of social formation and changes that make it distinct.
Childhood is a social construction with an age limit, but the specific age is determined by the economic and cultural conditions of each age and society.
The school manual is the educational tool, which is the basic element of the educational act both in the Greek educational system and internationally. It is an educational tool that is extremely affordable and economical for everybody interested, through which social control can be exercised among students and teachers. This reflects the dominant tendencies and values of the society in which it is produced and used, thus defining to a large extent the content of the schooling and the activities that teachers and pupils will develop. All of these are reasons that have put it at the heart of several systematic investigations.
School history is the didactic subject that, as the vector of the ideological burden of science itself and its particular role, shapes national collective consciousness, but also performs other roles, such as the knowledge of the past, the development of critical historical thought and consciousness, the formation of cultural identity, the acquisition of analytical skills by pupils and, at the same time, its thoughtful and exemplary role.
The purpose of this research is to investigate whether, and in what quality, "childhood" is present in the history textbooks of Primary and Secondary Education from 1964 to 2014, over a period of fifty years, while several political changes and educational reforms, with the result that others remain in the classrooms for a long time, and others have been hurriedly retired for various reasons.
