Summary:
In this anatomical research, twenty human cadaveries were studied by the researcher. Out of these, twelve were women cadavers and eight of them were men. Those cavaders are used in the training of the second year students of the Medical School of University of Athens.
Also eight cases of spinal cord blood supply from Anatomical Museum samples were used. Three of those samples were from men cadavers and five of women.
In the current study, two variations of the artery of Adamkiewicz were found during cadavers dissection. The meticulous knowledge of this arterial variants is of paramount importance for the surgeons intervening in the thoracolumbar area. The artery's lesion or injury or obstruction may lead to loss of urinary and fecal continence as well as to weakness and paralysis of the lower limbs (paraplegia).
