The contribution of Mathematics Competitions (National and International) to the detection of charismatic students in Mathematics, to their development as new scientists and to the formation of the Mathematics’ content in Secondary Education
Summary:
At the beginning of the article there are developed important concepts that function catalytically and indirectly influence the students' engagement with mathematical competitions. Describe and analyze concepts, education, Olympic spirit, struggle, contest, charisma, talent, education, motivation and influence.
Then, more detailed reference and analysis is made to mathematical contests. We mention the birth and evolution of mathematical contests by dividing them into two major categories (Greek and International). We also mention issues of competitions for better assessment of the thematic orientation and their degree of difficulty.
The detection of the characteristics of pupils participating in mathematical Olympiads is done through a survey of 429 students who participated in the 45th International Mathematical Olympiad (Athens 2004) and came from around 100 countries.
A second research follows (45th National Mathematical Olympiad "Archimedes", aiming at studying the contribution of competitions to the detection of charismatic students in mathematics.
The third research study examines the contribution of competitions to the evolution of students as new scientists. The results of the survey came from the study of the interviews of 26 Olympic students who participated with the Hellenic Mathematical Society in Greek and International Mathematical Competitions.
The conclusions of the above surveys lead us to formulate proposals for the curriculum development in secondary education with the aim of upgrading and better managing mathematics
