Determinism and Freedom: Contemporary Approaches on the Compatibility Problem
Summary:
The thesis seeks to answer the following question: whether free will is compatible with determinism. To provide an answer, the thesis presented, analyzed and dealt with the three most powerful deterministic arguments that have been put forward in contemporary philosophical discourse. In this context, it has been argued that a persuasive argumentative strategy in favour of the compatibility of freedom and determinism has two main components: first, it treats freedom as the ability to guide one’s conduct, rather than the ability to choose between alternate possibilities; second, it makes a crucial distinctions between first-person and third-person perspective and endorses the first-person perspective, through which agents deliberate and act freely.
